Does an Online-Only Shop Need a Google Business Profile for Merchant Center?

Separate online product listings from physical-store features, then correct the setup that represents your actual business.

An online-only shop does not need to invent a physical shop for Merchant Center. Online product listings and local store features serve different purposes. Check which marketing methods you enabled before treating a Business Profile request as a requirement for every merchant.

Google's Business Profile eligibility rules exclude online-only businesses without qualifying in-person customer contact. A registered company and a correspondence address do not make an online retailer eligible for a storefront profile.

Choose the business model that actually exists

Use this comparison to describe your operation. It is a starting point for checking the official requirements, not a substitute for them.

Business modelCustomer interactionSetup to investigate
Online-only shopCustomers order online and receive delivered products.Online Merchant Center product listings and website requirements.
Physical retailerCustomers visit a genuine shop to inspect and buy products.Eligible Business Profile and appropriate local inventory features.
Service-area businessStaff travel to customers to provide a service.Business Profile service-area rules; separate eligibility for any product programme.
Warehouse or fulfilment addressThe address handles stock but has no customer-facing shop.Accurate operational disclosures without inventing local retail access.

Google's representation guidelines explain storefront and service-area arrangements. A service-area profile should describe real customer visits by the business. It is not a substitute category for a shop that only posts parcels.

Check the enabled Merchant Center programmes

Google's local inventory policy requires a location where customers can visit, view, and purchase products. These local requirements differ from the online store requirements, which concern a functioning online purchase experience.

Our suggested audit begins with a list of active marketing methods, data sources, linked stores, and store-platform connections. Record which screen produces the error. Identify whether it concerns online products, local inventory, or the whole account.

  • Save the exact issue and affected country.
  • Check whether local inventory ads or free local listings are enabled.
  • Inspect any linked Business Profile and the location it represents.
  • Review the store app's settings as well as Merchant Center.
  • Compare local stock claims with the actual fulfilment process.
  • Record which connection supplies each setting before changing it.

Google has specific guidance for “No physical stores found in countries of sale”. For online-only businesses with that issue, it directs them to disable the local programmes. Follow the instructions for your platform and account.

Keep address disclosures accurate

A legal correspondence address, returns address, and customer-facing shop can serve different purposes. Explain those purposes clearly on the website. Do not label a fulfilment warehouse as somewhere customers can visit unless that is true.

Correcting local settings is not a reason to remove legitimate business contact information. Review each disclosure for accuracy and customer usefulness. If a returns address differs from the company address, explain the returns process clearly.

Fictional worked example: an online perfume retailer

This invented example concerns Meadow Scent, an online perfume shop using a third-party fulfilment warehouse. Customers cannot visit the warehouse. The owner finds a local-store error after enabling several features through a store app.

Observed problemCheck and correctionEvidence
Local listings are enabled. The owner confirms the business has no physical retail location and disables unsuitable local features.Settings before and after the correction.

A separate account policy notice remains. The owner records it for its own investigation.Full notice and review history.

The team checks that the online product source still describes the real products and delivery model. Its next action is to inspect the remaining account notice. Removing an unsuitable local setup does not prove the account is now compliant or reinstated.

Review connections before removing them

Google's store connection guidance explains how Business Profile links support local inventory and listings. Before removing a connection, identify any genuine stores that also use it. Avoid changing a multi-store setup based only on one online-only brand's needs.

Keep a change record with the person responsible, setting changed, reason, and date. After the change, inspect the current issue list. Separate resolved local configuration errors from unresolved product or account problems.

Read our Merchant Center suspension guide for that wider investigation. If another review is unavailable, use our review-button checklist. Our Merchant Center recovery service can assess the remaining notice through account diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Maps reviews for online Shopping ads?

Do not create an ineligible Business Profile to collect Maps reviews. Check the requirements for the online advertising programme you actually use.

Can a warehouse qualify for local inventory ads?

Stock storage alone is insufficient. Check whether customers can genuinely visit, view, and buy products under the local programme's rules.

Should I complete Business Profile video verification anyway?

First establish that the business and location are eligible. A verification request does not make an online-only operation eligible for a profile.

Will unlinking Business Profile clear a Merchant Center suspension?

Do not assume so. It may correct an unsuitable connection, while a separate product or account issue remains unresolved.
