AI Max Automatic Upgrades: A Policy Checklist for Ads and Landing Pages

Check the actual upgrade settings, generated wording, and destinations with a clear review owner and evidence record.

Check the AI Max settings in each affected campaign before reviewing its policy exposure. The useful question is which wording and destinations can now appear. An upgrade notice alone does not tell you that every AI Max feature is enabled.

Google's announcement, corrected on 11 June 2026, keeps September 2026 upgrades for Automatically Created Assets and campaign-level broad match. Dynamic Search Ads automatic upgrades begin in February 2027. The dated correction supersedes older September wording elsewhere on that page.

Record the actual feature state

Automatically Created Assets, or ACA, now appears as text customisation in current guidance. Google's announcement describes different feature mappings for legacy settings. Do not assume the ACA or broad-match upgrade activates final URL expansion.

Use the account notification and current setup instructions to check the resulting controls. Capture the settings before and after a change where records are available.

Review the claim and destination together

The following checklist is our preventive audit method. It is not a Google certification or evidence of an AI Max suspension surge.

Google describes text customisation as generating additional assets from campaign and website context. Review the material that can supply that context, including old offer pages and unsupported statements.

  • Read the headline with the destination's opening paragraph.
  • Check who appears to sell the product or provide the service.
  • Verify price, eligibility, availability, and important offer conditions.
  • Check manufacturer names and any implied official affiliation.
  • Identify claims that need evidence, such as certification or guaranteed results.
  • Open the destination with its tracking parameters and inspect the final page.
  • Record a specific correction and owner for each problem.

Review the whole customer journey. A reasonable headline can become misleading when paired with a page about a different service. A support article can describe a manufacturer without representing an offer from that manufacturer.

Our policy guide helps classify an actual notice. Our cloaking guide addresses a different issue. Dynamic destination selection does not, by itself, establish cloaking.

Use controls without assuming they settle compliance

Google's feature guidance describes campaign-level URL exclusions and brand controls. Check how each setting applies to the campaign and ad group. A saved exclusion should form part of a reviewed configuration, not replace inspection of the remaining pages.

If an individual generated asset is inaccurate, follow Google's asset removal instructions. Turning off text customisation also turns off final URL expansion when enabled. Record related effects before making a wider setting change.

Fictional worked example: a tools reseller

This invented example concerns Field Workshop Supplies. The advertiser resells tools but does not operate the manufacturer's support service. Its team reviews an affected campaign and finds text customisation enabled.

ObservationCheck and correctionEvidence
A generated headline suggests official manufacturer support. The reviewer compares it with the reseller agreement and removes the inaccurate asset.Asset ID, wording, and removal record.
A support page contains ambiguous affiliation wording. The website owner corrects the page to describe the actual service.Dated page versions and agreement scope.
Final URL expansion is enabled in this campaign. The operator reviews destination reports and excludes unsuitable support pages.Settings capture and destination review sheet.

The team records that final URL expansion was already enabled before this review. It does not attribute that setting to the automatic upgrade without evidence. The next action is to inspect new assets and destinations against the corrected baseline. No suspension or recovery result is claimed.

Assign a review owner

Have one person maintain the approved claims list and another own campaign changes where staffing allows. Record the evidence behind important claims. Set a review frequency that reflects spending, content changes, and the consequences of an inaccurate offer.

For example, a team can review daily during a major website migration, then adjust its schedule once findings stabilise. This is an operational choice, not Google's mandated cadence. Review immediately when a policy notice or inaccurate claim appears.

Use AI Max reporting to inspect available asset, search, and landing-page evidence. Our compliance retainer supports recurring review of policy-sensitive changes. Describe the campaign and controls through account diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Max causing a suspension surge?

The cited upgrade sources do not establish that. This article proposes a preventive review method, not a claim about suspension rates.

Does every automatic upgrade enable URL expansion?

No. Legacy settings have different feature mappings. Read the account notice and inspect the actual enabled controls.

How often should we inspect generated assets?

Choose a documented schedule based on account activity and risk. Increase review during major changes and investigate inaccurate claims promptly.

Does Google-generated text remove our review responsibility?

Treat every customer-facing claim as something the business must be able to support. Assign an owner to inspect generated text and destinations.
